Bill McKibben and Bill Gates have potential points of agreement about climate policy, and within their domains have produced masterful work. But a gulf separates them. Their inability to communicate says much about how we think about think about problems facing our society and discuss (or fail to discuss) policy solutions. It is a story of democracy in action – or not. It also provides an opportunity to examine how pre-conscious intuitions - about morality, about problem-solving, about the nature of democracy - both animate our creativity and pressure our attempts to be rational.
